The Legacy of a
Pioneer

Grand Master Rhin Moon Richard Chun, Ph.D. (1935–2017) was a monumental figure in the world of martial arts — a pioneer who brought the ancient traditions of Taekwondo to the United States, and an esteemed educator who dedicated his life to the promotion of martial virtue.

Born on February 22, 1935, in Seoul, South Korea, Dr. Chun began his martial arts journey at the age of 11 under the tutelage of the highly respected Grand Master Chong Soo Hong at the famed Moo Duk Kwan. By the age of 14, his dedication and skill had already earned him his first dan black belt.

Following the outbreak of the Korean War, his family sought refuge on Cheju Island, where his indomitable spirit was tested and forged. He later returned to Seoul to attend Yonsei University, serving as captain of the Taekwondo club before graduating in 1957. In 1962, Dr. Chun immigrated to the United States — an event that would forever change the complexion of Taekwondo in America.

Academic Achievements

Dr. Chun was arguably one of the most educated of the American Taekwondo pioneers. He earned a Master's Degree in Business and Marketing from George Washington University, an MBA from Long Island University, and eventually a Ph.D. in Education. His academic background enabled him to serve as a professor of health and physical education at Hunter College in New York City.

In 1964, Dr. Chun established the Richard Chun Taekwondo Center in New York City, which quickly became a mecca for practitioners worldwide, catering to champions, sports figures, and celebrities alike. His leadership extended far beyond his own dojang.

In 1973, he was appointed head coach of the U.S.A. Taekwondo Team, leading them to a second-place victory at the inaugural World Taekwondo Championships in Seoul. He later founded the United States Taekwondo Association (USTA) in 1980, serving as its President, and played a crucial role in organizing Taekwondo as a demonstration event at the historic 1988 Olympic Games.

Ranked 9th Dan by the Moo Duk Kwan in 1981 and the Kukkiwon in 1989, Dr. Chun was a repository of ancient wisdom. He authored several landmark, best-selling textbooks — including Tae Kwon Do: The Korean Martial Art and Advancing in Tae Kwon Do — which remain essential reference guides for thousands of practitioners globally. In 2004, his lifelong dedication was recognized with his induction into the Taekwondo Hall of Fame.

Grand Master Fred Kouefati

Grand Master Richard Chun passed away on November 15, 2017, at the age of 82, but his profound legacy continues to thrive. Before his passing, Dr. Chun ensured that the road he forged would not end. He officially appointed his right-hand man and senior student, Grand Master Fred Kouefati, to be his successor.

Grand Master Fred Kouefati, a 9th Dan black belt, was a devoted student who stood by Dr. Chun's side, assisting him in technique, instruction, and the administration of the Richard Chun Taekwondo Headquarters. Recognizing Grand Master Kouefati's unwavering commitment, deep-rooted connection to the Moo Duk Kwan heritage, and profound understanding of his teachings, Dr. Chun communicated his wishes to his family, cementing Grand Master Kouefati as the rightful predecessor to lead his organization.

Today, Grand Master Fred Kouefati serves as the President of the Global Legendary Taekwondo Headquarters (formerly the Richard Chun Taekwondo Headquarters).
